Call for Papers

Practitioners and policy makers in the areas of plagiarism and academic integrity from the international academic community are invited to share their experiences and expertise at the fourth biennial plagiarism conference.

Papers, posters, video and workshop submissions are invited on the following themes:

  • Creating a culture of honesty.
  • Ensuring authenticity in non text-based disciplines and multimedia.
  • Addressing non-traditional learning styles (for example overseas students, mature students etc).
  • Ensuring the integrity of research and published work.
  • Open theme. Suggested topics include: innovative assessment techniques beyond the essay, the changing nature of authorship in a Web 2.0 world, contract cheating, plagiarism detection etc.

Please note the official language of the conference is English.

Formats

Papers

An extended abstract of approximately 1000 words should be submitted in the first instance. This will be blind reviewed by the conference editorial board according to the criteria outlined in the following section.
Abstracts should be anonymised, and should be accompanied by up to 6 keywords.
A decision will be made whether to accept the abstract, and invite a full paper from the author, or whether to decline the proposal as unsuitable.

Should the abstract be accepted by the editorial board a full paper in support of the abstract must be submitted by 26 March, 2010.

Full papers should not exceed 5,000 words, and must be anonymised.

The following format is suggested as a guide for the content of full papers:

  • Background/introduction
  • Methodology
  • Findings
  • Discussion
  • Conclusion
  • References

All references must conform to the Harvard standard. Document it, a tool for recording and managing citations, produced by nLearning can be downloaded free of charge from http://www.documentit.co.uk/

Full papers will be included in the conference proceedings in CD format, and the conference website.

On receipt of the full paper, a decision will be made by the editorial board either to:

  • accept the paper, with no further amends required,
  • accept the paper, on the condition that the paper is revised to address the points raised by the reviewer,
    or
  • decline the paper (with reasons supplied).

Full papers must be submitted with any amendments requested by the conference editorial committee by 14 May 2010.

Authors of accepted papers will be assigned a 30-minute parallel session in the conference programme (as a general rule, allow 20 minutes for presentation, and 10 for questions), and will be required to submit any supporting materials such as PowerPoint presentations to the conference editorial committee by 11 June 2010.

In the case of multiple authors, following acceptance of the full paper, at least one author must register to attend the conference.

Workshop sessions

A 500 word outline of the proposed session should be submitted. This will be blind reviewed by the conference editorial board according to the criteria outlined in the following section.
Any technical requirements for the session, such as pcs or specialised audiovisual equipment, should also be outlined when submitting your proposal.

Proposals should be anonymised, and should accompanied by up to 6 keywords.

Authors of accepted proposals will be assigned a 60-minute workshop session in the conference programme, and will be required to submit any supporting materials such as PowerPoint presentations to the conference editorial committee by 11 June 2010.

In the case of multiple authors, following acceptance at least one author must register to attend the conference.

Poster presentations

A 300 word outline of the proposed poster should be submitted. This will be blind reviewed by the conference editorial board according to the criteria outlined in the following section.

Proposals should be anonymised, and should be accompanied by up to 6 keywords.

Accepted posters will be displayed in the main networking and exhibition area throughout the conference, and delegates will be given the opportunity to put questions to authors on their research during the lunch break on the second full day of the conference.

Posters should not exceed A1 size (841mm x 594mm) and can be displayed in either portrait or landscape format. Authors will be required to mail their poster in hardcopy to the conference editorial committee by 14 June 2010.

Video presentations

A 500 word outline of the proposed videorecording should be submitted. This will be blind reviewed by the conference editorial board according to the criteria outlined in the following section.

Proposals should be anonymised, and should accompanied by up to 6 keywords.

Accepted videorecordings must be submitted to the conference editorial committee by 14 May 2010, and will be loaded on the conference website in advance of the conference.

Video files may be submitted in any format, and individual recordings should not exceed 30 minutes.

Review criteria

Papers, posters, video and workshop submissions will be blind reviewed subject to the following review criteria:

  • Relevance to conference themes:
  • General relevance to debate on plagiarism.
  • Contribution to existing body of knowledge on subject.
  • Exhibits sound methodology.
  • Potential for an engaging and informative presentation.

Publication and copyright

Accepted papers, workshop, poster and video proposals will be made available via the conference website in advance of the conference, and will also be included in the printed programme, and the conference CD. Video presentations will be made available on the conference website. Full papers will be included on the conference CD which will be assigned an ISBN and will be provided to all conference delegates.

The conference adopts an open publication model, by which individual authors/institutions retain copyright, but submissions are licenced for use with the Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivative Works 2.0 UK licence, which does not permit commercial use or changes to the original.

Online submission process

The conference uses an online submission system.
Any author wishing to contribute their work to the conference must create an account for the system in the first instance. It is possible to edit work submitted to the online system until the submission deadlines are reached. Please ensure that you indicate when submitting your abstract whether it is for a paper, workshop, poster or video presentation.
